Cannon Hill Cemetery Wasilla AK
It has been reported that $25,000 was spent on Sonar on Cannon Hill Cemetery. 851 Check Street. If this is true.....would someone send a copy of the report to PO BOX 521612 Big Lake AK 99652 or nsult@hotmail.comhttp://houstonalaska10.tripod.com/id32.htm
Instead of a report clearing her property of being a cemetery I was sent this letter:
Wonder why she wants to shut me up so bad???? Maybe the sonar told her the truth.
Please help save Cannon Hill Cemetery
A permit was given by the City of Wasilla to build a Triplex at 851 Check Street. Mile ½ KGB road.
Bids are being taken to build this building.
A minimum of 9 graves can be proven at this site. Please abide by the Laws of the State of Alaska and the Laws of the United States of America when doing any work at this site.
Alaska Historic Preservation Act (Alaska Stat. §41.35.010 through §41.35.240).
A.S. 11.46.482
NATIVE AMERICAN GRAVES
PROTECTION AND REPATRIATION
ACT of 1990
[H.R. 5237]
Section 106 Historic Preservation Act.
I received a letter from Brenda Currier threatening me with arrest if I dont ignore her distruction of Cannon Hill Cemetery.
Dear Brenda Currier,
Your Warning is duly noted!
Now I understand why you are trying so hard to shut me up........ taking bids on the triplex I hear. Are you planning on making your sonar results public???? or will you let the contractors be charged with felonies. Even with your slab plan there will need to be digging. You have promised the tribe to let them observe the digging. Please contact them. Eklutna tribe may also be interested since their family may be there also. Lee Stephan would be a good contact.
Name your price. We have had pledges of support if our group can purchase the lot. The money is avaliable only if we would own the land.
I have never said to anyone that I represent you. Just the opposite, Friends of Old Knik represents the families of those folks buried on your lot. Our group is interested in protecting the sacred ground that is on your lot.
Those are the facts.
This is America!! I have the right to free speech! And to freedom of religion. Building the triplex is a desecration to the cemetery. Do you plan to sue the news agencies that cover this story too?? They will be calling soon!
A minimum of 9 Disinterment permits- Burial Transit Permits and new graves will be needed. The State Vital Statistics Office is aware of how many you need. If more bodies are found please treat them with the same respect.
My goal has always been that you should be paid back for the mistake made by the Borough during the platting process in 1975.
If other members of Friends of Old Knik are bothering you, Im sorry I have never told any one to bother you. We have members all over the world and they share my belief that cemeteries should not be developed or desecrated!
My visits to the property are strictly in the DOT right of way.
A law you might familiarize yourself with is A.S. 11.46.482
Please contact the tribes when you plan to dig up their ancestors. So they could at least say a prayer.
If folks remember the cemetery and they tell me should I ignore them ? Im not going to ignore them and I will find the platt of the cannon Hill Cemetery. Then you will know exactly where it is since you dont believe people who were there and attended funerals there. (Betts Family)
I dont even know where you live so I dont think charging me with stalking would work for you. But nice try. I promise to stay in the right of way when I pay my respects at your cemetery. But you cant force me to not visit the cemetery.
We will not be filing in Superior Court for lowering the assessment, since you did that for us. Cemeteries should not triple in value in 3 years. The borough is breaking state law by taxing you. Its your choice to continue to pay taxes. If you ask them to designate it a cemetery they will not tax you anymore. Now that you know it is a cemetery.
The idea of a land trade was an idea Vic Kohrings liked. It was mentioned at a public meeting in Wasilla. Im not sure why that offends you. He also suggested I do a petition.
Jim Colver also suggested a land trade. And he asked John Duffy to persue a land trade.
Charlie Fannon has promised to propose a land trade if he is elected Borough Mayor.
Are all these folks unstable, irrational, delusional, or obsessed. No, I dont think so, I think they are good christians trying to do the right thing.
If calling me names makes you feel better then you should be feeling rather well by now since you have bad mouthed me on many public record documents. I can turn the other cheek, because I know Im right. Cemeteries should be protected.
I will be gone to the lower 48 during this building season. So it isn't me you will have to deal with if you dig up bones without legal permits and plans to rebury them. Code Compliance of Wasilla understands the law and will make sure your permit is complied with.
Maybe no one else will care. and Maybe someone else will care. Maybe even alot of someone elses will care. Do you think the excavator is going to care? Will they risk getting charged with a felony for digging up a grave that I told you was there but that you denied??
Have a nice summer.

Brenda and John,
I see a few trees have been cut on cannon Hill. Has construction started or were they all cut by the kids we saw up there.
You will need a minimum of 9 exhumation permits 4 of which will be native. The judge in anchorage already gave our groups the right to file on behalf of the folks buried in the cemetery and their families. And if construction begins we will file.
Maybe you should have talked to Pat Hjellan or Newcombs wife. They have a much better recollection of the cemetery. Pat knew Frank Doherty.
Please persue a land trade with the city or borough. Maybe Troy Davis Homes would be willing to go with you and trade his native village at cottonwood for useable land. You would all be heros instead of grave desecraters. wouldnt that be a good thing?? The state may also partcipate if there isnt suitable borough or city land.

Thank you for not building the triplex yet. With all the building going on year round Im sure you could have. It is still my belief that the city or borough would reimburse you for the land. If you would like to ask them it would be more effective than if I ask them. I have posted alot of the public record on a webpage.http://houstonalaska10.tripod.com/id19.htm
We had a huge request for copies of the record and it was cheaper to post than to copy and mail. We have had response from friends all over the world and they all pray that you continue to make good choices about the special property you own. The families of David Reedy, Frank Doherty , and Bill Moffit are all requesting that the graves be left intact. They will support efforts for a land trade or buy out if you need their help.
Thanks again for not proceeding with construction,
Please consider asking John Duffy and Diane Kellar to purchase or trade land so we can all protect Cannon Hill Cemetery.

ps. Im not delusional or a nut case. I believe cemeteries should be left as cemeteries and not used as residential property. And now state and federal law mandates that. Hopefully soon local laws will mandate it also.

Dear Ms. Sult,
Thank you for emailing me on this matter. I have tried several times to contact you by phone but each time I was unsuccessful in reaching you.
In order for a body to be disinterred the requestor must submit a request, providing all required information, to the bureau or the local court for the Disinterment Permit. In many cases, but not all, a funeral home is involved in the process of moving of the remains and the funeral home assists the individual or individuals in obtaining the necessary permits.
I understand from the message you left for me that at least some of the families are opposed to the relocating of the remains. The bureau cannot deny the issuance a Disinterment Permit. If anyone is truly opposed to the relocation of the remains of a deceased, they should seek legal council on the matter.

Thanks for the reply. we were told it was turned over to the proper authorities. I assumed that would be your office. We will turn our information over to the tribe and they can proceed. We are hoping for a land trade to be secured before the next building season starts. Brenda Currier seems to still want to build over the top of these graves and we are hoping that will not happen. What a shame to lose such an important place in Alaskan History. If there is anything you could do to help we would sure appreciate it. Since it is only 1.22 acres we are hopeful this can be resolved. Thanks again for your reply.

Nancy, Thanks for the information. However, I was unable to open your attachment. I assume your attorney is still working on this case and offering advice. Also, I like the idea of a land swap. Why doesn't the City of Wasilla consider giving Brenda a piece of land comparable in value so that the former can set aside and designated a cemetery? Or perhaps the city could outright purchase the property from Brenda so she could use the money to buy land elsewhere to build her tri-plex. Have these options been explored? Vic Kohring
These are the facts that I know now. More will be added as I do further research at archives in the Lower 48. Washingon DC and Virginia have More information that will be added to this site as we find it.
1.There is a Cemetery at Mile .5 Knik Goose bay Road in the City of Wasilla. This cemetery was surveyed by the Alaskan Engineering Commission for the Railroad Townsite of Wasilla. Bill Moffit was the first to be buried there in 1923. David Reedy was laid to rest there in 1926 and Frank Doherty in 1931. Our documentation is the obituaries for David and Frank. Words of Orville Herning and Howard Wilmouth. Archeology observations by Doug Reger document several depressions that may be graves. The state of Alaska's AHRS lists only one grave at this site even though no-one from that department had visited the site or made updates to the summary to indicate the other evidence of other graves at the site.
Below are the documents that prove the graves on cannon hill do exist. Our hope is that they can be left intact and not developed. The plan to build a triplex there is still possible and we are praying that there can be a land trade or purchase by the City of Wasilla or Mat-Su Borough.
Friends of Old Knik has received one unsubstantiated report of remains being recovered from Cannon Hill Cemetery. While we did see evidence of digging on the old trail we have not seen 1st hand any digging in the burial area. We hope and pray that no digging will ever happen at Cannon Hill Cemetery. If the Company that did the test holes in 2005 would like to make a statement about the test holes we would be very grateful.
We are starting a petition to gather support of the land trade/purchase. Please print the petition and any of the documents you find relevant to convincing folks to support the preservation of the Cemetery.
2.Please help save Cannon Hill Cemetery.
We the undersigned ask the City of Wasilla to purchase the Cemetery located at 851 Check Street Wasilla Alaska.
1st surveyed in 1919 and used until 1948 many Alaskan pioneers and Natives are buried there.

OLDTIMER FOUND DEAD AT WASILLA
DAVID REEDY FOUND DEAD ON LAKE: HAD BEEN MISSING SEVERAL DAYS.
Stanley Herning, young man of Wasilla, who arrived in anchorage last evening, brings the news that Paul Reedy, pioneer resident of Wasilla and who was well known in Anchorage, was found dead near there several days ago.
The deceased had been trapping this winter down on the flats below Wasilla near the lake. The last time he was seen alive was New Year's Day. A searching party was collected several days later and after an extended search the body was found lying face downward on the ice of the lake. His death apparently resulted from heart trouble, the nature of which was not ascertained.
The remains will be laid at rest at Wasilla this afternoon by his friends and neighbors.
He is survived by two daughters and other relatives who are residing in the states. They have been notified of the sad occurrence.
